This Iconic Southern California Attraction Is A Unique And Thrilling Adventure

Despite having lived here my entire life, I am still constantly discovering fun and unique attractions in Southern California that I never knew about, like this family-friendly balloon ride in Irvine, CA. I am not big on heights and have never gone up in a hot air balloon, but I have to say, this is one ride I might just be up for.

Orange County's Great Park is an ongoing public space development on a decommissioned Marine Corps Air Station. More than half of the 800 acres have already become a popular collection of cool attractions and amenities.

One particularly eye-catching and thrilling attraction is the Great Park Balloon Ride. Once upon a time, this Southern California county was named for its many orange groves. Most have since made way for urban development, but this one massive orange is here to stay.

This iconic attraction is a tethered helium balloon (not a hot air balloon) - the first of its kind in the entire country - that has the ability to soar 400 feet into the air while remaining anchored to the ground by an incredibly strong steel cable. It is 118 feet tall and can carry up to 16 passengers at a time.

There are no age or height restrictions for the ride, it is wheelchair accessible, and there is protective netting around the observation deck, so this is a fun and safe ride that everyone can enjoy.

From the ballon, guests enjoy 360-degree views including the park’s landscape, and reaching as far as 40 miles when the air is clear.

Another beloved attraction sits right next to the balloon - the Great Park Carousel. This beautiful old-fashioned carousel features vintage-inspired artwork and 12 classic animals to ride.

Both the balloon ride and carousel are completely free of charge (parking is, too!) and operate until 10 p.m. I have to say, they are quite a pretty nighttime spectacle!
