Make the Most of March by Attending the Festival of Whales in Southern California

Dana Point is a small city in Southern California that should be on every individual’s bucket list. Not only is this destination home to breathtaking beaches and ocean views, but it is also known as the dolphin and whale watching capital of the world, as thousands of gray whales migrate along Dana Point's coast each year. To celebrate this incredible sight, this California city hosts the Dana Point Festival of Whales, and it’s a spring event you'll be sad to miss.

The Festival of Whales in Dana Point has been delighting locals and visitors alike since 1972. It is one of the longest running whale festivals in the United States and celebrates the annual migration of the gray whales near the city. Throughout the years, it has grown, but no matter the activities on the schedule, the focus of this spring festival is always marine education, appreciation for the gray whales, and conservation efforts.

This year, you’ll want to mark your calendar for the 54^th annual Dana Point Festival of Whales. From March 7 to March 9, 2025, this three-day event is packed with activities that are sure to delight members of the entire family.

This festival kicks off on Friday, March 7, with a welcome ceremony and reception. The highly anticipated Festivals of Whales Carnival will also begin that evening at Lantern Bay Park. As many events take place in this area, a shuttle is available from Dana Hills High School to make parking much less stressful.

Saturday, March 8, has everything from excitement to education. From a cardboard boat building contest and race to lectures, classic car displays, and live music, you'll have a full day ahead of you. I recommend you schedule a time to take a walk along the Harbor Boardwalk to visit the many vendors at the Modern Makers Mart. Also, don’t forget to check out the incredible Art in the Park and attend the annual Fish for Life Clam Chowder Cook-off, where you can vote for your favorite clam chowder dish from a variety of participating restaurants.

The final day of the festival certainly has no shortage of activities. You can participate in events like the Little Pirates Treasure Hunt, a beach clean up, sailing rides, kids’ fishing clinic and fishing trips, and a concert on the water that’s complete with a barbecue. With so much going on, you may need to sit down and create an itinerary so you don't miss your favorite activities.

Plus, there are many events throughout the community to add an extra dose of excitement to your weekend. Some of our suggestions include participating in the Doheny State Beach Whale Walk, visiting the interactive whale exhibit by the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, and enjoying the Dana Point Historical Society Walk Tour.
