Why Spending the Day at a Local Hotel or Resort Is the Perfect Daycation

Arizona winters are beautiful and mild, but the heat can be incredibly intense during summer. I am lucky to be able to leave town with my kids each summer to visit family in New England for a month or two, but the heat feels even more oppressive when we return. Aside from cooling off in our backyard pool, day trips to higher-elevation towns such as Flagstaff, Sedona, or Payson have become much-needed escapes when temperatures rise above 110 degrees. For those times, however, when I don't want to drive too far to escape the heat, a more localized daycation is ideal.

In the summer of 2025, CIVANA Wellness Resort & Spa invited me to indulge in a hosted daycation to experience a spa treatment, take wellness classes, and enjoy luxurious amenities. My daycation in Arizona at CIVANA was absolutely blissful, and if you want to escape the intensity of Arizona's heat this summer, spending a day being pampered, swimming in the outdoor pool, taking a cold plunge, and focusing on yourself here may make you forget how hot it is outside.

About CIVANA Wellness Resort & Spa

Set on over 20 acres and surrounded by the serene Sonoran Desert within Carefree, Arizona, CIVANA Wellness Resort & Spa is only about a 30-minute drive from Scottsdale. It also feels like a world away from the city, even though it's not too far. Carefree is more peaceful than Phoenix and Scottsdale, making it a wonderful town for some R&R while surrounded by the beauty of the Sonoran Desert. CIVANA's setting was idyllic, with views of cactus and mountains all around. I didn't realize it at the time, but spending the day at this world-class wellness retreat in Arizona was exactly what I needed on a summer day with triple-digit temperatures.

Upon arrival at this Carefree, Arizona, resort, I was greeted by staff and handed a water bottle to use and keep as a souvenir. I then headed to the spa, where I checked in for my first scheduled class, followed by a spa treatment, and then a workshop. The staff was incredibly helpful and made me feel welcome.

With a "focus on happiness first, healthiness always," CIVANA's take on wellness is a journey to reunite the mind, body, and soul while embodying four pillars: Movement, Spa, Nourishment, and Discovery. Whether you take a fitness class, participate in a workshop, meditate, book a spa treatment, or spend time poolside, you're bound to feel relaxed and refreshed by the end of the day. I felt like a new person once my spa day in Arizona was over!

Spa Treatments at CIVANA Wellness Resort & Spa

The spa menu offerings at CIVANA cover everything from massages, reflexology, water therapy, and Reiki to body scrubs, facials, and nail care. My day pass to CIVANA included one 60-minute treatment. It had been quite a while since I had been at a spa, so I put a lot of thought into it. Because I work out every day, I decided to go with a Deep Muscle Relief Massage to break up the knots and alleviate any stress, pain, or soreness I was experiencing. It was exactly what I needed!

Before your spa experience, you can spend time in the relaxation room on the second floor. Here you can help yourself to water, hot tea, and fruit, and relax on a couch, a chair, or a daybed. The space is incredibly comfortable, but if you want to spend time outside, there's a balcony overlooking the pool and desert landscape.

Classes at CIVANA Wellness Resort & Spa

With my day pass, I was able to choose from a number of classes, including both fitness and wellness. From early morning into the evening, there's a full schedule with something for everyone. Guests can go on a guided hike, mountain bike ride, or other adventurous excursion for an added fee. However, there are numerous classes that are included in your overnight stay or day pass. You can start your morning with a meditation, take a yoga class (including aerial yoga) or a Pilates class, get your strength and cardio in with a more intense fitness class, and end your day with a gratitude circle or sound healing.

I signed up for two classes: Empowered Pilates and the Sensual Embodiment Class. Empowered Pilates was led by an expert instructor and fitness influencer, and it was more challenging than I had anticipated. While I struggled with some moves, with and without the Pilates ring, I felt incredible afterward.

The Sensual Embodiment Class was a bit out of my comfort zone, but I decided to try it anyway. This 90-minute workshop, led by a best-selling author, was all about female empowerment and harnessing your feminine energy. I was impressed with the class and the instructor's expertise.

Amenities at CIVANA Wellness Resort & Spa

CIVANA's spa building offers incredibly relaxing amenities. You can find a quiet spot to read or meditate in one of the relaxation areas, including one outside by the steam room. There's also a 25-meter lap pool surrounded by lounge chairs, and you are able to order food and drinks from the pool. My favorite amenity was the Aqua Vitality circuit room with a Sanarium (similar to a Finnish sauna), a Kneipp walk through pools of both cold and hot water, a Cold Deluge, and a Watsu therapy pool. Water therapy is certainly an important part of wellness, and that is evident here at CIVANA.

In addition to the spa amenities, you can stop by Seed for a light snack or smoothie or enjoy a nourishing meal made with seasonal, local ingredients at Terras. Each on-site eatery offers numerous plant-rich options. At Seed, I had a Golden Lassi made with oat milk, mango, pineapple, coconut yogurt, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, and maple. I ordered it mainly due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Next time I visit CIVANA, I plan on dining at Terras.

I felt like a new person after my daycation at CIVANA Wellness Resort & Spa. There are two options available on the website for day passes: the Day Pass with Spa Treatment or the Day Pass with 2 Spa Treatments. Between the Pilates class, the feminine energy workshop, a deep-tissue massage, and enjoying the sauna and variety of pools, I was able to focus just on myself for a day. No kids, no distractions, just pure bliss! Would I come to CIVANA again? Absolutely, and maybe next time I'll even spend the night.
