I drive by this fascinating place nearly every day. Set back from the road in an affluent neighborhood in Paradise Valley, it's easy to pass by, but the sign on the road welcoming visitors always beckons. Visiting Cosanti Originals is like stepping into a world of whimsy in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Coasanti Originals has been in the same spot on Doubletree Ranch Road in Paradise Valley since the mid-1950s. The structures on the property were designed and built by architect, philosopher, and urban designer Paolo Soleri, born in Italy. The technique he developed and used on the structures is known as earth-casting, which gives them an earthy, otherworldly look. The technique involved building "from the roof down and outside in," which is an unconventional approach, but it's part of what makes visiting Cosanti so alluring.

When my son was young, he always wanted to stop here after I picked him up from school. So, sometimes, we would stop, and he would explore the buildings in fascination. Recently, after realizing I hadn't been in years, I took my daughter here, and as a creative type who loves nature, she found Cosanti quite awe-inspiring.

What I love about this one-of-a-kind art gallery is how the buildings are seamlessly integrated into the surrounding desert landscape. The structures resemble caves, with symbols, animals, and figures etched into the concrete. If you gaze up at the ceiling of a main outdoor art gallery, you'll notice a red stained-glass dome, wind bells suspended beneath it, and a table showing off handmade ceramics.

As you head back on the path toward the entrance, stop inside the gallery shop and gaze upon displays of bronze and ceramic windbells. You can even listen to the sounds the individual bells make. The store even has cases of jewelry, bronze and ceramic tiles, pots, bowls, and plant hangers.

If you want to give someone a unique gift made in Arizona, for a birthday, a wedding, or some other special occasion, I suggest coming here—you'll find something perfectly fitting for the event. Or, if someone is passionate about a specific cause, a Cause Bell makes the perfect gift. When you purchase a Cause Bell, a portion of the proceeds is sent to a specific non-profit each year.
