As someone who’s called Alaska home for over 16 years, I’m always on the lookout for fresh, unique ways to experience this incredible state. From glaciers and wildlife to hidden gems even locals might overlook, there’s always something new to explore in the Last Frontier. This year, I’m diving into some unforgettable adventures, hikes, and must-visit spots.
Here’s our 2026 list of the best things to do in Alaska this year.
1. Marvel at Brilliant Aurora Borealis in Fairbanks, Alaska

Fairbanks is one of the best places on Earth to see the aurora borealis. The long winter nights offer prime viewing conditions, and the city has plenty of cozy lodges designed specifically for aurora viewing. Consider visiting from August through April. While I’ve seen them in Anchorage, I would love a long night planned out up north!
2. Get Up Close to Hubbard Glacier on a Cruise

Exploring Alaska’s remote coastline is high on my list, and a cruise to Hubbard Glacier outside of Yakutat promises breathtaking views. Known as the "Galloping Glacier," it’s famous for its active calving, where massive chunks of ice crash dramatically into the water. Getting up close to this natural wonder is a must-do for 2026, even though it's hard to reach. The best seasons to visit are in May and September.
3. Escape to an Off-Grid Cabin in Alaska’s Wilderness

I’m craving some off-the-grid peace, and a stay in a remote cabin in Wrangell-Saints Elias National Park is the perfect escape. Waking up to the sight of glaciers, surrounded by untouched wilderness, sounds like a dream come true. Plus, there’s something deeply refreshing about disconnecting from modern life to reconnect with nature. Consider planning earlier, as the main cabins are easily accessible by small planes and gravel roads.
4. Kayak Through Stunning Icebergs at Spencer Glacier

Paddling through icy waters surrounded by towering glaciers is as Alaskan as it gets. Spencer Glacier offers an incredible kayaking experience, where you can glide past floating icebergs and marvel at the glacier's sheer scale. It’s an adventure I’ve been meaning to take, and 2026 feels like the right time to hop the whistle-stop on the Alaska Railroad and go check it out!

This challenging trail offers some of the most jaw-dropping views in Alaska, and it’s been on my bucket list for years. The Harding Icefield Trail takes you past alpine meadows and up to a viewpoint where you can see an endless expanse of ice. It’s a physically demanding hike, but the reward at the top makes it more than worth it. But here is the thing: due to limited parking, be sure to arrive earlier.
