The Stunning Works Of Art At The Alaska State Snow Sculpture Championship Will Wow You

Many people think that Alaska is dull or boring in the winter, but there are so many things to do all over the state.  There are so many events to enjoy, like outdoor fun such as skiing or winter hiking, or winter festivals and carnivals. Every year during Fur Rondy in Anchorage, the Alaska State Snow Sculpture Championship showcases the most amazing snow sculptures you will ever see!

Every year, talented snow sculptors descend on Anchorage.

They come from all over to celebrate during the winter carnival festival, Fur Rondy. You'll see the artists bring their varying skill levels to the incredible artwork they create during the championship.

The Ironworkers Local #751 Apprenticeship help move the snow cubes into position.

These huge, heavy, 8ft by 8ft by 8ft cubes of snow need a crane to be moved into their spot in Ship Creek. The entire area underneath the bridge is filled with artists and their tools.

There are five divisions that have artists compete for first, second, and third place.

The categories are: Team of Three, Schools, Families, Corporate, and Solo. There's also the People's Choice Award, which goes to the one the public loves the most.

You can cast your vote anytime before March 8th for whichever sculpture you want to place first.

Your vote will help determine the winner of this award, which is a highly coveted award among the artists! Show your support and head on over to see which one strikes your fancy.

The winners go on to compete in the US National Snow Sculpture Championship.

They will end up representing Alaska in a larger arena. Winners were chosen on March 1st this year, so if you visit this weekend you will get to see who will head on to the national stage.

This event is one of the highly anticipated events during Fur Rondy.

Visitors come from all over to see these fun snow sculptures. There's plenty of parking nearby, or you can make the short walk from downtown Anchorage!

This event runs the entire Fur Rondy festival.

You can see it every day from February 28th through March 8th, from 10:00 a.m. through 10:00 p.m. each day. The event is free for everyone, and is located under the bridge in Ship Creek, across from the Comfort Inn.
