This History Museum In Alabama Has A 750-Year-Old Canoe On Display That Has To Be Seen To Be Believed

We're lucky to have many types of museums here in Alabama. While some of our museums are easy to find, there are plenty of others that are somewhat hidden. One of these somewhat hidden museums is the Washington County History Museum. Nestled in the heart of the county, this museum is a gateway to explore the remarkable stories, events, and cultural heritage that have shaped the region. Through its diverse collections, engaging exhibits, and interactive displays, the Washington County History Museum offers visitors a captivating journey through time, inviting them to immerse themselves in the vibrant tapestry of the county's past.

The Washington County History Museum is located in the basement of the Washington County Courthouse in Chatom, Alabama.

It has several types of artifacts on display that depict the history of Washington County, which happens to also be Alabama's first county.

...farming equipment. To see how much has changed over the years is truly amazing.

If you're a photography enthusiast, you'll be in awe of the photographs and cameras on display.

The Washington County History Museum also has a display of kitchen items that you don't see every day.

The museum's most famous artifact of them all is its 750-year-old canoe, which was discovered in 1973. It sure looks much different from today's canoes.

It was embedded in a bank of the Tombigbee River, and we're fortunate that after all of these years, it was finally discovered.
