Whenever we think of Alabama, the last thing that comes to mind is an enchanting castle. Surprisingly, nestled within the charming town of Fairhope stands a castle that's so whimsical that it could be straight from the pages of a storybook. This whimsical piece of architecture is Mosher Castle, and when you see it up close, you'll feel like you're in a fairy tale.
In 1983, artist Dean Mosher and his wife, Pagan, purchased a small 1950s-era home and have been redesigning it for the past 30+ years into the enchanting castle it is today.
Dean hand-built Mosher Castle, and no detail was spared. Mosher Castle is both a home and studio for Dean and Pagan. It's also the home where their children grew up.
The tower of Mosher Castle includes two bedrooms on both the second and third floors, which were used by the Mosher's children.
Mosher Castle's roofs, doors, balconies, windows and furniture were constructed by Dean from his very own designs. The castle's interior and exterior is made mostly of local materials.
No castle is complete without a moat and drawbridge, right? Luckily, Mosher Castle has a drawbridge that spans across a moat. This drawbridge provides access to Dean's studio.
Dean's love for lions is pretty evident when you see the intricately-designed pieces he's added to the castle.
Mosher Castle has been featured on several television networks, including APT and HGTV. And to this day, it still receives a lot of media attention.
Each year, Mosher Castle receives thousands of visitors. The Moshers welcome visitors to photograph the exterior of Mosher Castle anytime. However, you're asked to contact them first if you wish to use a professional photographer or take a group tour. Remember, Mosher Castle is a private residence. Please don't show up knocking on the Mosher's door.
