If you're looking for a ghoulish adventure with just the right amount of spookiness, the Pumpkin Patch Express at Wales West Light Railway & RV Resort is just the ticket. At this Halloween train ride in Silverhill, Alabama, you can pick the scare levels to suit everyone in your group.
RV travelers know Wales West for its many amenities and central location for exploring the Gulf Coast. As the resort rotates through seasonal events, the property transforms with decorations galore.
The main attraction for the events - riding the trains - also speaks to the park's name. In the country of Wales in Great Britain, narrow-gauge (or "light") railways serve remote areas. With these tracks, the space between them is only 2 feet, less than half the distance between standard rail tracks.
While you can buy train ride tickets on-site, purchasing them online is your best bet for guaranteeing seats.
The Pumpkin Patch Express offers two different types of steam train rides, a non-scary ride and a scary ride.
The non-scary rides are especially kid-friendly and take off in 30-minute intervals starting at 4:20 p.m. on operating days.
Passengers deboard the trains at the Pumpkin Patch, where they can choose a pumpkin to decorate. Optional activities include a haunted maze, mini-train rides, a pumpkin cannon, and a tractor-pulled "hayless" hayride.
A café and concession stand serve up refreshments and snacks. Hot tip: People rave about the kettle corn.
As the sun sets, you may begin to see signs of questionable characters amid the cheery pumpkins, like Ghoulzilla. That's a sign it's almost time for the night trains to take off.
As the skies grow dark, the scary train rides begin at 7 p.m.
While the scary rides aren't so terrifying or strictly for adults, a lot of ghouls definitely are afoot as the train follows its path.
Younger children probably should sit that one out. You too, if you're a fully grown adult like me who doesn't like those kinds of surprises. My win-win? Let the others get their fright fix while I watch and entertain the littles.
Beyond the trains that give its name, Wales West welcomes guests year-round to its large property with 77 RV sites, a fishing lake, beach, playground, pool, and more.
The resort also hosts train rides for every season, with a Cottontail Express ride in spring, Summer Fun Express after Easter and until fall, the Pumpkin Patch Express through October, and the Arctic Express through the winter holidays.
If you aren't an RVer planning to stay onsite, you can find affordable and comfortable accommodations less than 10 miles west at Hampton Inn Fairhope-Mobile Bay. The hotel is in the heart of Fairhope's historic and colorful downtown shopping and dining district.
You can get more details about train departure times and buy tickets on the Wales West website. Stay in the know about special announcements by following Wales West on Facebook.
