1. Laurel Falls from Lost Falls Trailhead

Most visit DeSoto State Park to visit the namesake 100-foot waterfall. This, however, is not the only falls in the park, and if you're looking for something a bit more tucked away, the Laurel Falls to Lost Falls Trailhead is an excellent option. This 2.3-mile loop trail is considered moderately difficult, with just over 200 feet of total elevation gain. Along the way, you'll get to enjoy two of the park's smaller falls as well as lovely, clear streams. Of course, you'll want to try to time your visit after a rainfall; otherwise, the water features may be dry.

2. Talmadge Butler Boardwalk Trail

There are few things lovelier than a boardwalk trail. Take the Talmadge Butler Boardwalk Trail for an easy 0.6-mile out-and-back adventure through the forest. This hiking trail is a great option for beginners, as there is very little elevation gain. Throughout most of the year, this trail is relatively uncrowded, but those in the know will take the steps at the end of the trail to an enchanted place called Azalea Cascade, which is beautiful in the springtime. This is also a fantastic place to enjoy a packed lunch, with a couple of picnic benches and a gazebo along the way.

3. H. Stanley Sims Native Plant Area

Most visitors are at the park to chase some waterfalls, but I'd argue that the plant life is every bit as fascinating. If you agree, the H. Stanley Sims Native Plant Area should be on your list. This protected area showcases Lookout Mountain's native flora, and it's located just a short walk from the main Lodge and the Mountain Inn Restaurant.

4. Mentone Market

This one is a bonus. Mentone Market isn't exactly a secret to locals, but it is a delightful general store just a few miles outside of the park's boundaries. After all of your exploring and adventures, refuel at this delightful eatery famous for its specialty pizzas. It's the place to go to experience true Southern Appalachian hospitality, and after your meal, you can peruse the gift shop for the perfect souvenir.

Avoiding the busiest spots in DeSoto State Park doesn't necessarily mean avoiding all the park's main attractions, but rather being purposeful about your timing. If you're able to get to the park early, the morning will feel decidedly more secluded than the middle of the day. You might also consider visiting in the middle of the week, which is less busy than weekends. Lastly, consider the route. There are a handful of trails that lead to the same attraction, so if you're interested in a waterfall trail, consider a different way to get there.
