A Trip To The Oldest Hot Dog Stand In Delaware Will Delight You In Every Way
Though Delaware is a small state, we’ve got a reputation for having some hidden gem restaurants serving up delicious food. Sure, not every hole-in-the-wall will be cooking up an aged ribeye or fresh-from-the-bay oysters, but sometimes you’re craving comfort food, and when that craving hits, you’ve got to head up to the Dog House.
If you've spent any time in Delaware at all, chances are you've driven past the Dog House in New Castle. It's hard to miss the sign from the side of the highway.
The Dairy Whip was successful, but by 1952, the Sloans opened the Dog House. Hot dogs were just more profitable! They eventually tore down the Dairy Whip to expand.
Since the beginning, the Dog House has been known for their split-grilled hot dogs served with all the trimmings. You can get yourself a chili cheese dog, a regular cheese dog, or just pile it high with sauerkraut and mustard.
The menu hasn't changed much in 65 years, but there's more than just hot dogs. A variety of sandwiches (including mouthwatering cheesesteaks), subs, and pizza are all available right here.
This iconic hot dog stand – the oldest one in Delaware – can be found at 1200 N Dupont Hwy., New Castle, DE 19720. Remember that it’s cash only (though there’s an ATM inside) and that you’ll probably have to wait for a seat at the counter. The Dog House is open 10:30 a.m. to 12 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and on Sundays, hours are 11:30 a.m. to 12 a.m.
