Connecticut is home to splendid state parks. Everyone knows about the
majestic cascades at Kent Falls State Park and the fascinating history behind Sherwood Island State Park, but there’s one idyllic getaway that remains a bit of a hidden gem. Take a trip to Avon and enjoy the peaceful views of Horse Guard State Park. With 105 acres of undeveloped land, this enchanting park is a wonderful place to escape to.
Escape from the crowds at Horse Guard State Park.
This state park was named after the First Company Governor's Horse Guards. Established in 1788, they are the oldest active mounted cavalry unit in the United States.
Even though the state purchased the land back in 1964, this area remains a hidden wonder.
This may be due to the lack of development. In the past 50 years, there haven't been many updates.
What this enchanting area lacks in amenities it makes up for in peaceful woodland views.
If you're hoping to get away from it all, plan a trip to Horse Guard State Park in Connecticut.
Because there aren't any picnic areas or swimming spots, this lovely state park doesn't get much foot traffic.
But you will find one scenic path in this undeveloped area. For a picturesque stroll, embark on the White Trail.
This 1.5-mile out-and-back trail begins at Avon Historical Society's Derrin House.
Five generations of the Derrin family occupied this house from 1766 to 1920, and it's now listed on the State Register of Historic Places. You'll find this piece of the past on West Avon Road.
This short and sweet hike leads you to a rocky cliff overlooking the town of Avon.
Don't skip over this underrated state park in Connecticut. It's full of astonishing sights.
