Do you need a little adventure in your life? Are you somewhat of a thrill-seeker? Or perhaps you just really want to walk nearly 1,000 feet over the roaring Arkansas River? No matter your answer, you are going to want to cross this stomach-dropping Colorado suspension bridge that is a true Centennial State icon. Here's more about the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado and why it belongs on your travel bucket list.
Welcome to the famous Royal Gorge Bridge, the highest bridge in America.
At one time, the bridge also held the record for the world’s highest suspension bridge. The Royal Gorge Bridge lost its title of world’s highest in 2003 after the construction of China's Beipanjiang River Bridge, which stands at a gut-wrenching 1,201 feet high, but we can still claim the United States record!
Located in Cañon City, the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado is a jaw-dropping 1,260 feet long...
...18 feet wide...
...and has 1,292 wooden planks.
The Royal Gorge Bridge sits around 955 feet above the Arkansas River.
As it was built in 1929, some might think that the suspension bridge would be too old to hold large amounts of people and vehicles, but this has never been the case.
In fact, the Royal Gorge Bridge has seen a number of renovations and up-keep projects throughout the years, most famously in the early 1980s when $2.8M was put in for new cable anchors, suspension rods, and paint.
The Royal Gorge Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
Today, more than 350,000 people experience the suspension bridge walk each year, and an estimated 26 million have visited since it first opened in 1929.
The Royal Gorge Bridge is located at 4218 County Rd. 3A in Cañon City and opens daily at 7 am.
