This Enchanting And Historic Town In Colorado Is The Perfect Day Trip Destination
If you crave a mini getaway but don’t have the time or funds, a day trip may be just the solution! Fortunately, these quick excursions are easy to come by in Colorado, thanks to our many diverse towns and cities. However, if you are looking for a day trip that is equal parts enchanting and fun, you will want to visit this tiny hidden gem:
Welcome to the small (population: 807) but mighty Oak Creek!
Located in Routt County, Oak Creek was first settled as a mining camp, with the first coal mine opening in 1890 and continuing through most of the early to the mid-20th century.
Like so many towns of its time, the mines would eventually go dry; however, instead of going under, Oak Creek would learn to adapt and shift its economy to tourism.
Because of its location in the Yampa Valley, outdoor tourism came naturally to Oak Creek, thanks to its beautiful landscape and easy access to skiing and snowboarding, hiking, fishing, scenic drives, and more.
When you visit, you will want to spend as much time outside as possible, which is easy to do with the beautiful trails at Oak Creek Mountain Park and the many recreational opportunities at Stagecoach State Park (pictured).
If you love hunting and fishing, there is no better place to be than Oak Creek, which is considered to be one of the best places in the state for both!
While there is plenty to do just outside of town, there is also lots to see within city limits, including unique opportunities for shopping, dining, and museums.
