“Adventure to new heights,” challenges the structure’s website, adding that you should “See the inspiring castle built entirely by one man.” The castle, of course, is the amazing Bishop Castle in Rye and it truly is a site to behold! Built entirely by Jim Bishop, Bishop’s Castle is a magnificent 160-foot-tall spectacle that has been a work in progress since 1969. After buying the land for a cool $450, Bishop intended to construct a small cottage for his family, but went above and beyond after hearing comments from neighbors about how the stones made the home look like a castle.

If you think the outside of the castle looks amazing, wait until you get a load of the inside, which consists of such royal features as a fire breathing dragon made completely out of discarded stainless steel warming plates, dramatic stained glass, and iron-wrought stairs and bridges throughout the home. Want to know the best part of the experience? Since Bishop remembers missing out on family outings due to the high cost of admission, he doesn’t charge admission to his castle (however, donations are greatly appreciated)!

Bishop Castle is located at 12705 CO-165 in Rye and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information on the structure and its history, please visit Bishop Castle’s website.
