Located in the small town of Allenspark is the extraordinary St. Catherine of Siena Chapel; a former Catholic church and historic Boulder County site that has welcomed hundreds of thousands of tourists from around the world! Built in 1916, the “Chapel on the Rock” has served as not only a holy place of worship, but also as a retreat center and pilgrimage for St. Pope John Paul II, who blessed the church during Denver’s World Youth Day in 1993. Through the years, St. Catherine’s has seen its fair share of hardship, including a massive fire in 2011 that destroyed much of the chapel’s surrounding St. Malo Retreat Center, as well as a giant landslide and flood in 2013 that rendered the site unusable. Fortunately, plans are are underway to restore the chapel, but tours of the interior are currently on hold.
