There are a lot of "world's largest" things in Arizona, and today, we're going to highlight one of the most incredible of them all. Tonto Natural Bridge State Park is home to the largest natural travertine bridge on earth, and it's certainly among the grandest natural wonders in Arizona. Welcome to the incredible Tonto Natural Bridge, the largest natural Travertine bridge in the world.
Deep in the heart of Rim Country, in the small town of Payson, lies a natural wonder whose grandeur must be seen to be fully appreciated.
Tonto Natural Bridge State Park is home to what is believed to be the largest natural travertine bridge in the world. The stunning landmark is 183 feet high, and it sits atop a 400-foot-long tunnel that measures 150 feet at its widest point. Park visitors can embark on four separate trails to admire the bridge from a variety of angles.
One of the most popular trails is the Waterfall Trail, a short and sweet hike that leads to an expansive cave underneath the bridge.
After heavy rains and in the springtime, you can see a waterfall cascading down from the rocky outcropping overhead.
The Waterfall Trail only takes around 15-20 minutes to complete, so it's perfect for stacking on top of some of the other trails in the park.
Other trails include the half-mile Pine Creek Trail, the Anna Mae Trail, and the 2,200-foot-long Gowan Trail, which leads to an observation deck at the bottom of the creek.
All of the trails are fairly steep, and the Waterfall Trail requires hikers to climb an uneven staircase.
Please remember to wear appropriate shoes and bring lots of water!
While the bridge is the undeniable main attraction at the park, it isn't all there is to see. Visitors can also tour the three-story Goodfellow Lodge that was built in the 1920s.
The verdant landscape is also home to abundant wildlife, and there are plenty of picnic tables where you can simply sit and admire the sights and sounds of nature.
