There are so many natural attractions around Arizona that feel otherworldly, even heavenly. From the Grand Canyon to the Painted Desert, from the Desert Botanical Garden to the red rocks of Sedona (my personal favorite), jaw-dropping beauty abounds here. One lesser-known natural wonder in Arizona you may also liken to a little slice of heaven is Agathla Peak. Found within Navajo Nation, it’s worth getting a glimpse of in person.

Rising 1,500 feet above the vast landscape that surrounds it, Agathla Peak almost seems out of place. Also known as El Capitan, this striking peak is actually an ancient volcanic plug formed approximately 25 million years ago.

As a volcanic plug (or a volcanic or lava neck), this was once part of an active volcano and is made of hardened magma as well sedimentary rock, and minette, a type of igneous rock.

Agathla Peak is found within Navajo Nation just south of Monument Valley and the Arizona-Utah border. When driving towards it, its jaw-dropping presence certainly seems otherworldly.
