Alaska has a long and interesting history. Talkeetna, a historic town in Alaska, is a funky little town filled with history, including its inception as district headquarters for the Alaska Railroad. This town celebrated its centennial a couple of years ago, and it's a charming place to explore some of the most interesting areas in the Interior of Alaska! There’s a small town off of the Parks Highway in Alaska that you need to visit.
The historic town of Talkeetna is a gem situated at the confluence of three rivers: the Susitna, the Chulitna, and the Talkeetna. The town was established in 1916.
It was actually founded to be the district headquarters of the Alaska Railroad.
To this day the railroad runs a regular route right through Talkeetna town. It runs a passenger train year-round with a stop in this lovely little town.
The core downtown area is known as the Talkeetna Historic District.
It’s actually on the register of National Historic Places. 80 of the lots in the immediate area were auctioned off by the Alaska Railroad for an average price of $14.25 in 1919.
If you walk to the end of downtown, there’s a lovely little path to the river and a great campsite if you want to spend the night. On a clear day, you can see stunning mountains in the distance!
Some of the buildings, including the Fairview Inn, Talkeetna Roadhouse, and Nagley’s General Store, were built in the early 1900s.
Many of the structures downtown look like they were lifted right out of a history book. There are great places to eat and sleep just steps from the railroad stop.
Talkeetna is most well known as the base for those attempting to climb Denali.
This historic town in Alaska is filled with pilots, mountaineers, and explorers. Although it’s a small town, Talkeetna is rich with the history of adventurers planning their expeditions.
As this town is right on the outskirts of Denali National Park, there are so many outdoor adventures to experience.
There’s great hiking, skiing, and more right nearby. The town also has an amazing selection of restaurants and a healthy arts community.
