Sunset Photos Of Alaska
Why is Alaska called the Land Of The Midnight Sun?
In the summertime, the sun in Alaska seems to never set. In places like Utqiagvik, Alaska, “The Northernmost American City,” the sun doesn’t set for almost two and a half months. You’ll find the sun above the horizon from May 10th through August 2nd. However once you start heading farther south in the state, below the Arctic Circle, you encounter midnight twilight. The sun sets, but only a little, and you experience a couple hours of sunset glow before the sun begins to rise again. It’s hard to find true darkness anywhere in Alaska during the summer months.
Is it dark all the time in the winter in Alaska?
Utqiagvik is the town that will see the most darkness in the winter. From November 18th through January 24th, the sun never ascends above the horizon. In the southern areas of the state you will still have a darker winter than the Lower 48, but you will still experience a couple hours of daylight during the darkest of the winter months.
