There’s an incredible lake hike in Skagway that you need to experience. The Lower Dewey Lake Trail In Alaska brings you through incredible scenery and on a trail that has fireweed popping right along the lakeside. The is one hike that’s beautiful year long, but extra special when the firewood is in bloom.

There’s a stunning day hike located close to downtown Skagway.

In fact, the trailhead is right by the train station, and easy to access. This is a short, great hike if you want to spend the morning or afternoon enjoying everything Alaska has to offer.

This trail spends most of its time paralleling the gorgeous Lower Dewey Lake Trail.

It’s a three-mile loop that brings you up to the lake before depositing you back downtown. The views will take your breath away all along the way.

The trail is well marked and easy to follow.

You start on a steep switchback for half a mile up the hillside. You’ll gain 793 feet total throughout the entire hike.

The majority of the trail is rolling, and easy to hike.

With the view, there’s plenty of spots to take a moment and soak it all in. Take a picnic with you and spend some time relaxing in the area.

There are so many wildflowers to see along the hike, including gorgeous fireweed.

It’s a wonderful way to while away the hours. The entire trail shouldn’t take you more than an hour or two.

If you’re interested, you can camp in the backcountry around this area.

Permits aren’t required, but please practice leave no trace, and keep fires in designated fire pits. It is bear country, so come prepared to keep your food out of reach of the wildlife.
