If you’re in Kachemak Bay State Park and looking for a hike that will knock your socks off, the Grewingk Lake Trail in Alaska is the perfect one! A moderate trail, it has all the checkpoints for a memorable adventure. Grab your kit, order a water taxi, and head on out to Halibut Cove!
It was the very first state park in Alaska! It’s located right on Kachemak Bay and is filled with incredible wildlife and stunning sights to see.
The Saddle and Grewingk Lake Trail is a moderately easy trail and one that’s filled with jaw-dropping beauty any time of year. Autumn offers something a little extra, with more panoramic views peeking through the bare trees.

The beginning of the trail is quite steep. You’ll find almost the entire 820 feet of elevation gain right at the beginning, which means the hard part is over very quickly!

The trail is well maintained and marked. Follow the signs to Grewingk Lake, and you’ll see small rock cairns along the trail.
Bring your camera, pack a picnic, and enjoy the sights before heading back. Remember you are in the remote Alaskan wilderness, so practice backcountry and wildlife safety. Pack out what you’ve carried in.
There are quite a few boat taxis located in Homer’s boat harbor that are available for drop off and pick up. You can set a schedule for pickup, so you can head back to Homer when you’re done. Water taxis run $80.00 round trip for one person.
