A Christmas Star Will Light Up The Alaska Sky For The First Time In Centuries
Something wonderful is happening this holiday season; you’ll have the chance to see the Christmas star in Alaska! This very rare celestial event is happening this year on December 21st. You’ll have the opportunity to see an event that won’t come around again until 2400 A.D.
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life. While we continue to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, please take proper precautions or add them to your bucket list to see at a later date. If you know of a local business that could use some extra support during these times, please nominate them here: onlyinyourstate.com/nominate

This super rare phenomena happens when Jupiter and Saturn become closely aligned. To the naked eye, this makes one bright and beautiful star!

This year you’ll have the chance to see it yourself on Monday, December 21st. This magical day is also winter solstice, another great day to celebrate in Alaska.

In fact, it’s only visible for about an hour after sunset. Look to where the sun has dipped below the horizon, and Jupiter should be visible in Anchorage until 6:22 p.m. Search the night sky for this star from sunset until then!

Take a drive, and if you have a telescope, bring it too! This is one thing you won’t want to miss. You’ll be telling your grandchildren about this breathtaking event.

There will be one more event in 20 years, but the planets won’t be as close as you’ll see this month. They won’t be this close again for another 400 years.

Early risers in the northern parts of the state will see another fascinating phenomena, the moon will pass in front of Venus at about 4:30 a.m.

Make this a family event so everyone can enjoy the show. And if you’re really lucky, you might even see the northern lights dance across the sky while you gaze at this stunning Christmas star in Alaska.
