There’s Only One Remaining Train Station Like This In All Of Alabama And It’s Magnificent
It’s no secret that Alabama has a great history, especially its railroad history. As a matter of fact, several structures are still standing today that’ll remind you of the state’s earlier railroad days. One structure, in particular, is the Huntsville Depot. To learn all about this train depot, including what makes it truly stand out, take a look below.
The historic Huntsville Depot is located in downtown Huntsville. Completed in 1860, it's Alabama's oldest surviving railroad depot. It's also one of the oldest railroad depots in the United States.
This historic depot originally served as eastern division headquarters for the Memphis and Charleston Railroad. Today, it's operated as a museum.
The museum is filled with lots of interesting exhibits. During your guided tour, you'll get to see these exhibits up close and learn all about the depot's history.
There's also a model train set on display that depicts what the historic Huntsville Depot and surrounding area looked like in the early 1860s. After looking at this, it's hard to believe Huntsville is now one of Alabama's most populated cities.
After touring the museum, visitors are welcome to walk the grounds where they'll encounter the Roundhouse,...
...the depot locomotive, and...
...several historic transportation vehicles.
There's also the Autohouse, which houses an antique fire engine (pictured) and the city's very first ladder fire truck.
The next time you're in Huntsville, consider stopping by the historic Huntsville Depot. It's one of Alabama's top historic landmarks, and it's a definite must-visit for history lovers and train enthusiasts of all ages.
