By now you've probably heard how pickleball's popularity has swept the nation over the past several years. Did you know a pickleball facility in Opelika, Alabama has been a premier place for players since it opened in 2019? Let's take a look at this destination that USA Pickleball has called "magnificent."
Thanks to years of persistence by a local pickleball enthusiast, the city of Opelika built its original pickleball facility behind its Opelika SportsPLEX. The destination opened with 12 courts in 2019 with an initial investment of $650,000.
The first facility opened with perfect timing because 2019 is around the time pickleball began growing so much in popularity nationwide.
In 2022, the city doubled the facility's size to include 24 courts. All of the courts are covered, which allows for year-round play.
Not only are there 24 courts but they're open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Players are asked to turn off lights before they leave.
The courts are also fenced for tournament-style competitions. Occasionally courts are closed to host these competition events.
It may go without saying the city has an active Opelika Pickleball Club that calls the facility home, organizing tournaments, fundraisers, and other special events.
You can even watch the live video feeds to see the popularity of this place in action. Keep up with the latest pickleball events in the city on the Opelika Pickleball Facebook page.
