The Tutwiler in Birmingham is a historic and haunted hotel known for its luxurious accommodations and ghostly encounters.

From restaurants and hotels, to houses and bridges, there are many haunted places located throughout Alabama. If paranormal activity fascinates you, you'll most definitely want to book a stay at The Tutwiler---one of Alabama's most haunted hotels. Not only will you be staying at one of the state's finest hotels, but you might even have a haunting experience.

The Tutwiler is located in downtown Birmingham at 2021 Park Place. Even though this upscale hotel has been renamed the Hampton Inn & Suites Birmingham, it's still famously known as The Tutwiler.

The Tutwiler was originally built in 1914 on the corner of 20th Street and 5th Avenue North. In 1974, it was demolished and replaced by the First Alabama Bank. In 1986, The Tutwiler reopened for business at its current location, which used to be the Ridgely Apartments.

This historic hotel, which is the Magic City’s first modern hotel, is the perfect place to stay while visiting Birmingham.

The Tutwiler underwent a complete renovation from 2005 to 2007. The moment you enter the hotel's lobby, you'll be blown away by all of the beautiful furnishings and decor.

The hotel includes 149 guestrooms, featuring 53 suites. Six of the suites are balcony suites.

Depending on where your room is located, you'll possibly have an incredible view of downtown Birmingham.

If you haven't already heard, The Tutwiler has its very own ghost. As the story goes, Major Tutwiler was a former resident of the Ridgely Apartments. His ghost is well known for knocking on guestroom doors during the late night hours.

A few years ago, the ghost of Major Tutwiler was causing even more mischief. According to hotel lore, the lights and stove were constantly being left on after closing. The bartender was blamed for this. After happening five nights in a row, the manager called the bartender and told him to come to work immediately.

Upon arriving, he noticed a full-course meal accompanied by a bottle of wine and candles. From then on, the hotel staff would tell the ghost of Major Tutwiler "Good night Major!" each night at closing. They would also ask him to kindly turn off the lights and stove, and to not make a mess.

There have also been reports of lights turning on and off by themselves, doors shutting and closing on their own, and faucets turning on and off. Very strange!

If you're looking for a unique place to stay in Birmingham, look no further than The Tutwiler. And who knows? You might encounter the ghost of Major Tutwiler.
