The Restaurant And Craft Cocktail Bar In Alabama Inspired By Victorian-Era Gin Palaces
Do you love local restaurants as much as I do? Then you're going to go crazy for Juniper, a restaurant and craft cocktail bar in Birmingham, Alabama, that has earned a following for its lush atmosphere, delicious food, and artfully prepared drinks. The main location opened in December 2021, with a lunch-only location opening at the Birmingham Museum of Art in early 2024.
Juniper offers a fitting throwback to the Victorian era with its location in the Forest Park neighborhood, which began to develop around the turn of the 20th century.
Juniper began as a creative collaboration between Ali Randall, Blake Posey, and Alden Williams. Chef Thyme Randle joined the ownership group in 2022.
Each partner contributes distinct talents to create an experience where no detail is left unattended, which is clear the minute you enter the space. The interior design combines luxurious fabrics, curated antiques, a mix of modern pieces, floor-to-ceiling arrangements of gilt-framed florals, and pops of plant life.
According to the restaurant's website, the vibe draws upon the "ornate gin palaces popular during the Victorian era." One of the buzziest features is its suspended antique sofa seat.
Keeping the gin-palace theme is the well-stocked and sizable bar and a thoughtful drink menu with rotating seasonal craft cocktails, many gin and soda options for adventurous pairings, and tasty mocktails for the moderates and teetotalers.
No matter your order, expect an artful presentation worthy of the artful surroundings.
The food menu also changes seasonally and is constructed with pairing and sharing being top of mind. While there are single-entree options like the burger or lamb chops, other plates like the chicken skewers, edamame hummus, and hearts of palm croquettes are perfect for splitting with a friend and trying a taste of several things.
The chef is a longtime fixture of the Birmingham cuisine scene, especially known for his vegan and vegetarian skills. As such, you'll find several of those options.
The botanical vibe extends to the patio, a favorite local spot for outdoor drinks and dining during nice weather. The space also lends itself well to educational classes, like one recently offered on the intricacies of gin, provided by Diageo.
