You see, fish are the main part of a bald eagle’s diet; however, they can’t retrieve fish from frozen rivers. So, thousands of eagles winter along the Mississippi River, which doesn’t freeze completely due to its turbulent waters.

So, where should you look for eagles? Anywhere in the state, really. Eagles have been seen in every county in Wisconsin, except for Milwaukee County. More specifically, any river with a dam is likely to have eagles flying above.

You can also attend one of the state’s many eagle watching events, such as Sauk Prairie's Bald Eagle Watching Days, which is a fun annual activity that usually happens each January. Another event, Bald Eagle Appreciation Days, is scheduled for late February in Prairie du Chien. Both bring in bird watchers from all around the country.
