This peculiar town was established in 1902 and peaked in population during the 1930s when it was home to about 150 residents. As the years passed, young people moved to larger cities and older residents died off.

By 2000, Monowi was home to a single married couple, Rudy and Elsie Eiler. Rudy died in 2004, making Elsie Eiler the sole resident of Monowi.

Eiler acts as mayor and operates the town’s only business, the Monowi Tavern. She grants herself a liquor license and pays taxes to herself.
