14 Strange Habits Every South Carolinian Will Defend To The Death
To some degree, we're all set in our ways. Ask us to change our religion or our political party and you may as well be talking to a wall. But there are other things that culturally, we as South Carolinians are dedicated to as a group. These things are some of what brings us closer together as a society. If someone dares to move in and try to change them, well ... look out. Take a look at some of the things we South Carolinians will defend to the death:
1. Honor.
We defended it then, and we'll keep on defending the honor of South Carolina and her people.
2. Our (undeveloped) wide open spaces.
Thinking of pitching up a huge resort or a hotel in a spot that's as pretty as this in South Carolina? You're sure to have a huge battle ahead. We love and covet our wide open spaces.
3. Our freedom to dress casually at work.
There are only a few places in the South where you can wear flip flops with dress pants - to work. And thank goodness this is one of them! Of course there are a few "hard-nose" employers that frown upon it. If you live here and work for them, bless you.
4. Our beaches.
And our sunrises/sunsets. They're the most beautiful in the world, hands-down.
5. Our favorite color, a.k.a. team.
Be it orange, scarlet, blue or green, we'll defend that "color" and team to the end.
6. The EXACT ingredients that actually belong in Frogmore Stew.
Vary this combo even slightly because you're feelin' that pretty green zucchini or you want to add squash, or even crawfish...and you'd better have your birth certificate on hand to prove you're actually a native.
7. Speaking of food (this is a Chicken Bog)...
We love all of our quirky southern cultural foods, don't be trying to make us feel weird just because you're too "chicken" to try new stuff.
8. Our Second Amendment rights.
Whether it's to go hunting, or sport shooting or simply have the security that comes with owning a firearm - we'll defend the right all day long.
9. We likely all agree that M.B. is the best place for wild and crazy out-of-towners to let loose.
Don't get us wrong, M.B. we love you, but we know you're the best city in the state equipped to handle 100,000 motorcycles all visiting in the same week.
10. Supporting our local fishermen is super important.
Besides, fresh fish just tastes better. When you're in a restaurant in our state, ask if the fish is local to South Carolina before you order.
11. Our lack of real snow.
We may secretly wish for a little snow each year, but in reality we're happy to be in the "snow desert" each year - especially when the other side of the coin is digging our way out the front gate after a heavy snowfall. No thank you!
12. Being friendly.
We can't help it. Seriously. And part of it has to do with being a state that hosts so many tourists. It's just so easy to talk to smiling vacationers!
13. Getting out on - and in - the water as often as possible.
With so many lakes, rivers, waterfalls and of course, the Atlantic Ocean, how can we resist spending time in the water?
14. Talking profusely about how beautiful and amazing our home state is.
Seriously. To anyone who'll listen.
As someone will definitely point out, several of these things certainly aren't "exclusive" to South Carolina, but they are a big part of the cultural experience in the Palmetto State. Are there other things about South Carolina that you'd defend 'til the cows come home? We'd love to know in our comments!
