If You Can Pronounce These 8 Places, You’ve Lived In Maryland For Far Too Long

1. Havre de Grace

This town name looks pretty intimidating at first, but it's pronounced Hav-ruh-deh-Grace. Once you learn it, you'll have it down forever.

2. Bowie

No - not like a hair bow. Locals pronounce this Maryland spot BOO-ee.

3. Tilghman Island

No need to cough and hack to try and pronounce the GH in Tilghman. This beautiful island is simply pronounced Tillman.

4. La Plata

It's pronounced La-PLAY-tah, which throws a lot of people off.

5. Ellicott City

My Pennsylvania side of the family pronounces it ell-eh-COTT. Locals, however, relax the last part of the word and pronounce it more like ell-eh-CUT City.

6. Assateague Island

After chuckling over the beginning of the word, know that Assateague is pronounced Ass-uh-teeg.

7. Ijamsville

Don't even think about pronouncing the J in Ijamsville. Simply take it out and you've got Eye-emz-ville.

8. Worcester County

The Pennsylvanian part of me wants to pronounce it with an H, kind of like Worchestershire sauce. However, locals know this place as Wooster County, confusing out-of-towners everywhere.
