Whether you’ve known a person for years or you’re just getting to know them, where you go for dates is important. In West Virginia, there’s plenty of fun places to have a date that you’d never have to settle for a boring dinner and movie combination. Here are some options.
1. Raft the New River
Then check out some of the great restaurants that Fayetteville has to offer. Pies and Pints, Secret Sandwich Society and Gumbo’s are all favorites.
Catch a hockey game
If you’re in the Wheeling area and like sports, check out a Wheeling Nailers hockey game.
3. Tour the West Virginia Penitentiary
This one’s not for the faint of heart, but if you’re into being spooked, check out a ghost tour at the former state penitentiary in Moundsville.
4. Tour the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum
Once a hospital for the insane, now the asylum (also called Weston State Hospital) is open for tours year-round. Like the penitentiary, this date idea is not for the faint of heart, as it is reportedly haunted, but the scare factor might encourage some handholding.
5. Go skiing at Snowshoe
Some of the best skiing in the region can be found in West Virginia. Check it out if you and your partner like winter sports.
6. Catch a show at Theatre West Virginia.
If your sweetheart is into history and music, catch a historical drama about West Virginia at this theater in Beckley.
7. Take a hike
...On one of our state's many hiking trails. There are so many of them, there’s bound to be one in your part of West Virginia.
8. Stargaze at Spruce Knob
Did you know that, according to the state’s tourism department, Spruce Knob is the darkest stargazing site in the Mid-Atlantic? I can’t think of a more romantic sight. This picture was taken from Spruce Knob during the recent Perseid meteor shower.
9. Create your own work of art
Uncork & Create walks participants through the process of creating their own paintings. The results are beautiful paintings, even if you don’t have any artistic talent. And bring your own beer or wine if you’d like. They have locations in Charleston and Huntington.
10. Take a walk on the wild side
With a cat walk tour of the New River Gorge. (Better make sure your date isn't afraid of heights if you pick this one.)
11. Catch some great music at Mountain Stage
Catch a live recording of Mountain Stage on NPR at the Culture Center theater in Charleston. They bring in great acts.
12. See a movie at the Pipestem Drive In
It's sure to be a unique experience.
13. Take a cooking class at Huntington's Kitchen
Huntington’s Kitchen offers a variety of cooking classes that would be a lot of fun for a couple to do together.
14. Ride the rails at Cass Scenic Railroad
Trains are so romantic!
