Have you ever been talking to someone who’s not from Washington when they just start bombarding you with the same old questions about life in our state? It can get so annoying to answer them over and over again! How many of these stereotypical things have you been asked by people who aren’t from around here?
1. "You're from Washington? You mean Washington D.C.?"
No, more like the entire state on the other side of the country. Ironically, our area used to be named "Columbia" after the Columbia River but it was later changed to Washington to avoid confusion with the District of Columbia. Genius move.
2. "So you're from Seattle?"
You know there's more than just one city in the whole state, right?
3. "Isn't Washington pretty much Canada?"
We may both have a city named "Vancouver" but that certainly doesn't make us any less of a state than anyone else!
4. "Do you drink a lot of Starbucks?"
Depends on who you ask, but most of us prefer the smaller cafes to get our daily caffeine fix - especially these
unique coffee shops
5. “Is everyone crazy about recycling?”
We might care about the environment, but not all of us are going to lose our minds if you toss your bottle in the wrong bin.
6. "Isn't weed legal in Washington?"
Yes, but we aren't all partaking in it. Besides, it's legal in a number of other states now too.
7. "Have you seen Bigfoot?"
No... have you?
8. "Are you a Seahawks fan?"
Most of us have respect for the home team, but to be fair, not everyone's a fan or is even into sports at all.
9. "Do you wear socks and sandals?"
Definitely not. It may be function over fashion, but chances are you won't see anybody around here wearing these together.
10. "Does it rain all the time?"
This one probably gets asked the most by far, and really, it isn't all that bad. Head out to Eastern Washington and you'll need to stock up on sunblock!
