Most towns have certain times of the year when they look their best. The state capital, for instance, looks smashing in spring when its many cherry trees come alive with fluffy, pink blossoms. And, with its dense forests and sprawling farmland, Bellingham has autumn covered. But there’s no doubt that one of the best winter destinations in Washington is Winthrop, located in the stunning Methow Valley. If you’ve never visited, there’s still time to see this delightful community with a dusting of snow.
Washington earned its nickname, the Evergreen State, for its dense conifer forests. Still, just east of the Cascades, the landscape changes drastically, bearing little resemblance to the westside's quintessentially Northwest scenery.
Long ago, mighty geological and climactic forces created North Central Washington's rugged terrain. The communities that endure here have had to be equally tough. Though Indigenous peoples made use of the region's natural abundance for centuries, it was a rag-tag group of gold prospectors who founded Winthrop in 1883.
With a population just shy of 400, Winthrop hasn't grown much in the decades since it served as a stomping ground for miners. The perfect gateway to al fresco adventure, it's now a popular destination for in-state getaways.

It's easy to see what's to like about this isolated community. With buildings that date back to the late 19th century, Winthrop exudes antiquated charm. In fact, The Virginian, generally lauded as America's first Western novel, was penned by author Owen Wister after he spent his honeymoon in town.
No matter the season, Winthrop easily ranks among Washington's finest small towns, but a layer of snow accentuates its old-fashioned character. After a day of snowshoeing, skiing, or being pulled in a sleigh, perusing the cozy businesses lining Riverside Avenue is the perfect way to warm up.
Speaking of warming up, stop by my favorite Winthrop cafe, Jupiter, for a baked good and coffee. With its generous front deck, it almost looks like an expansive treehouse.
Over the years, Winthrop has built a reputation for its abundance of Old West charm. It's easy to see why this unique community attracts so many visitors each year, ready to brave the cold. With snow on the ground, it's at its best.
