Starting to make your summer vacation list? We can’t always get away for weeks at a time but fitting in a spontaneous picnic here and there can feel like a mini getaway. For an unforgettable picnic in the center of town, visit the Outdoor Campus in Sioux Falls. Located next to Sertoma Park, this area is brimming with trees, prairie grasses and wildlife. It’s perfect for a romantic picnic with your significant other or for family picnic with the kids.
2. Bear Butte.
Take a hike up to the top of Bear Butte and bring your picnic with you. This natural formation and the scenery that surrounds it will have you in awe.
3. The Falls in Sioux Falls.
You may have visited the Falls before but this is your opportunity to really appreciate how stunning they are. With the river cascading over the quartzite rock, a picnic at the Falls is a reminder of the beautiful state in which we live.
4. Spearfish Canyon.
Spearfish Canyon offers many places to stop and picnic. Stop at one of the designated picnic areas or take a hike and make your own picnic area! Just be sure to take out any trash or extra food you bring with you.
5. Cascade Falls in Spearfish Canyon.
Located in Spearfish Canyon, Cascade Falls is so stunning that it deserves its own feature. The falls themselves offer the perfect backdrop for your picnic. After you eat, stay to swim in the swimming hole located near the falls.
6. Harney Peak.
Turn your picnic into a day adventure by eating at the top of Harney Peak. Start your hike in the morning and come prepared for quickly changing weather. We guarantee it's worth the hike. And once you’ve made it all the way to the top of the highest point in South Dakota, why not stay a while and enjoy your picnic?
7. Chamberlain at Missouri River.
Stop in the center of South Dakota for a picnic on the Missouri River. The rest areas in Chamberlain offer stunning river views, making it the perfect stop in the middle of a long road trip.
8. Lewis & Clark Lake.
If you’re in need of a date idea, this is for you! Take your significant other out to Lewis & Clark Lake to watch the sailboats and have a picnic. If you want something even more romantic, have your picnic out on a sailboat.
9. Good Earth State Park at Blood Run.
A South Dakota hidden gem, Good Earth State Park is stunningly beautiful. Serene hiking trails lead you to views like nowhere else in the state. Once you’ve visited, you’ll definitely be coming back.
10. Lake Vermillion Recreation Area.
Come for a picnic and stay for the camping. This recreation area is perfection. Perfect for picnics while fishing, boating or sunbathing - Lake Vermillion is a family friendly favorite.
