10 Awkward Moments Every Rhode Islander Has Endured At Least Once
Rhode Island is a small state with big personality! The people from the smallest state are no different. We have a very unique and vibrant culture that you simply can't understand until you live here. Because of how strong our traditions are, we often get into a little bit of awkward situations while traveling. Here are some examples.
1. That time asked where the nearest bubblah is while out of state...
You quickly realized this was a Rhode Island only word! Who knew?
2. You ordered your coffee regular while traveling and ended up with a black coffee...
You were expecting sugar and cream! When you tried to get it corrected everyone thought you were crazy.
3. The moment you had to explain that Rhode Island is actually a state...
No. Rhode Island and Long Island are not the same place.
4. You also had to explain that Rhode Island is not an island, but there are some gorgeous islands off the state's coast.
Rhode Island is named after the Island of Rhodes.
5. That time someone thought you were from Boston because of your accent.
We actually sound totally different!!!
6. You ordered your ice cream with jimmies while on vacation.
These are referred to as chocolate sprinkles everywhere else.
7. You used the word wicked in a sentence and were completely misunderstood.
In Rhode Island this is just used to stress a point. "My weekend in Newport is going to be wicked awesome."
8. You tried to give someone directions, but they were unfamiliar with the business that closed 10 years ago that you used as a landmark.
Rhode Islanders only give directions based on where businesses used to be and the Dunkin Donuts along the way.
9. That time you tried to explain how small your home state really is.
It fits into Texas a couple hundred times and you can drive across it in an hour tops.
10. Living in a small state means you're constantly running into exes and that friend you had a falling out with.
It's important to maintain healthy relationships in such a small state. You will be running into familiar faces everywhere you go.
Rhode Island is definitely a unique place! For more on what life is like in state click here.
