Yesterday, we brought you the most dangerous places to live in New Jersey; that list was much more difficult to write than this one. While we only have several dangerous cities, we have dozens of safe places to live all over the state. We are one of the safest states in the country, after all. Here are some of the safest towns to live in, of all sizes. Please note that rankings are based on FBI crime statistics for the year 2013, the most recent year for which data is currently available.
This town often tops the lists of safest cities in the country! With over 30,000 residents, you may be surprised to learn that there have been no murders in the past decade and only about a dozen robberies reported in the past year.
With a violent crime rate of zero percent and a low property crime rate, this town is safer than 85% of the towns in our country.
This small town is safer than 97% of the United States! The suburb of Trenton has nearly 3,000 residents but had no murders, burglaries, robberies, arson or auto thefts in 2013.
4. Spring Lake Heights
This lovely town is situated between the beach and Allaire State Park. If you enjoy the outdoors, you'll love it here, and you can take comfort in knowing the crime rate is 90% lower than the national average.
5. Bernards Township
A bustling town in the heart of the Somerset Hills, the Bernards Township Police Department takes a progressive approach to policing. They are constantly evaluating their methods to keep the town of 25,000 in check. It's clearly working with a crime rate well below the national average.
This town takes up 30 stunning square miles of the Ramapo Mountain Foothills. A town so large can be difficult to police, but Ringwood doesn't seem to have a problem. There were only 90 crimes reported last year, quite a feat for a town of 12,000.
Though from this photo you might think Manalapan is some tiny farm town, it is actually a diverse city with nearly 40,000 residents. Just 20 minutes from the beach and about an hour to New York City, Manalapan offers an ideal location and a crime rate nearly 90% lower than the national average.
8. Cedar Grove
This NYC suburb places a premium on safety. A popular place for families, there were only 4 violent crimes reported last year.
The population of the city has nearly doubled over the last decade, but crime rates have not. Lakewood is safer than 70% of towns in the United States, even with a population of over 50,000. The South Jersey Town is home to Georgian Court University and the BlueClaws minor league baseball team.
10. Washington Township, Morris
There are several Washington Townships in New Jersey, but we are referring to the Morris County neighborhood surrounding Schooley's Mountain. With a population of nearly 20,000, there were only 4 violent crimes reported last year. The town is very civic minded, with a focus on historical preservation.
