But what are the most famous ones? We take a look at eight of the most famous homicides in the history of Illinois. 1. John Wayne Gacy Wikipedia Gacy assaulted and murdered at least 33 boys and young men in Chicago. 2. Tommy O'Connor Wikipedia O'Connor killed a police officer and was scheduled to be executed when he escaped. He was never found. 3. August Spies Wikipedia Spies was one of the people who set off a bomb at police during the Haymarket affair. He was executed for his role. 4. Nicholas Troy Sheley Wikipedia Sheley killed 8 people with a hammer during one fateful week in 2008. 5. Leopold and Loeb Wikipedia If you've seen the movie "Rope," you're familiar with this crime. Two wealthy University of Chicago students killed a 14 year old just to see if they could get away with it. 6. William Heirens Wikipedia Heirens killed at least three people.
