Now that 2016 has fully begun, it’s time we looked back on 2015 and appreciate all those moments we may have forgotten. You know the ones I mean; those super strange occurrences that make headlines and leave us all scratching our heads saying, “What in the world?” Let’s take a trip down memory lane and talk about seven of the most insane things that happened in Georgia in 2015.
1. Emu Directs Traffic on Atlanta Highway
OK, so maybe the emu wasn't exactly directing traffic, but it certainly held things up for a while. What drivers initially though was an ostrich, turned out to be an emu running around Interstate 20 back in May. Apparently, this flightless bird had gotten loose from its owner's land nearby, and decided to try his wing at hitchhiking. Luckily, the bird was captured without injury and returned to its owner.
2. Man Wins Lottery, Throws Tickets Away in Rome, Georgia
Back in August, Cedric Jackson thought he had just missed winning a $5,000 jackpot on two of his tickets. So, he asked the convenience store clerk to toss the losing tickets in the trash. Little did he know, the tickets had actually been winners! After going through trash cans and dumpster with the owner, Jackson left the store with nothing. And then, plot twist! The store clerk remembered he threw the tickets away in the office, and called Jackson to come in a retrieve them. That meant $10,000 in winnings for Jackson, and a good deed done for the store clerk.
3. Man Shoots an Armadillo, Bullet Hits Mother-In-Law
This is one of those stories that you really have to see to believe. Back in April in Lee County, Larry McElroy loaded up his 9mm pistol in hopes to shoot an armadillo on his property. Turns out, the armadillo shell was hard enough to ricochet the bullet, which then hit a fence, and went into the back door of a mobile home 100 yards away. That unlucky bullet then went through the recliner and into the back of Carol Johnson, McElroy's 74-year-old mother-in-law. Although Carol made a full recovery, we need to add a very sad, R.I.P. to the Armadillo with a nearly-titanium shell.
4. Dr. Who Star Charms Atlanta Dragon Con....In a Dress
John Barrowman, star of "Arrow", "Torchwood" and "Dr. Who", showed up to the famed Dragon Con convention wearing a rather fitting dress. Barrowman took the stage for his panel in a dress designed specifically to look like the TARDIS spaceship from the show "Dr. Who." I must say, that really is his color.
5. Virgin Mary appears in a Marietta Church Window
What some described as "faulty coating" others are considering a divine miracle. A local church in Marietta discovered this "Christmas phenomena" back on December 12. Father Fernando Molina-Restrepo took a photograph and posted it to Facebook for their followers to see and offer their own interpretations. I'm not sure what's more fascinating to me, a Virgin Mary appearing in the window, or a social media savvy priest! Hmm...
6. Army Sergeant Has a Close Encounter of the Third Kind
June 2015— "C.J.", a First Class Sergeant in the U.S. Army experienced an insane occurrence, a telepathic download of binary code. From where? One cannot be sure. "C.J." explained, "This big disc had symbols on it that looked like they were part of the object's metallic skin, but a darker color within the smooth metal surface, not raised or etched in, I don't think.” What's even stranger? The binary codes were extremely similar to one reported by two other Sergeants in 1980. Coincidence? You decide.
7. El Niño Comes Back With a Bang
Merely one month ago, South Georgia experienced some of the strangest weather historically to date. Unusual spring-like conditions were said to be attributed to "El Niño", a weather pattern that brings sub-tropical climates. December reached record-breaking warm temperatures, but unfortunately also a slew of heavy rain. However, one must ask, is this weather better than snow?
Thankfully, all of these wonderfully weird and strangely off-beat things that happened in Georgia in 2015 are well-documented.
