Alabama ranked third of all the states when it came to charitable donations, according to Philanthropy.com. The data given was from 2012 tax documents and broken down by metropolitan statistical areas. It says that Alabamians gave 4.87% of their adjusted gross incomes to charity, which translates to $3,039,256,000 total contributions. The whole state must be pretty generous, but aren't you curious which cities in Alabama gave the most?

The following were the top 10 most generous metropolitan areas in Alabama:

10. Auburn-Opelika

These cities had a giving ratio of 4.61%, or $87,942,000. Great job, everyone!

9. Mobile

The cities in this metropolitan area gave a total of $225,952,000, or 4.69% of its adjusted gross income. Just one more thing to love about this historic city.

8. Birmingham-Hoover

Birmingham-Hoover had a 4.78% giving ratio, which was a staggering $1,006,017,000! Looks like our biggest city also has a big heart.

7. Florence-Muscle Shoals

The Shoals made $79,551,000 in total contributions, or 4.82% of their adjusted gross income. Now that's music to our ears.

6. Gadsden

Folks in these towns gave 5.13% of their gross adjusted income, or $47,013,000. Way to go, Gadsden!

5. Dothan

Dothan is known for having one of the lowest costs of living in the country. Apparently folks in this area believe in paying their good fortune forward, because they gave 5.21% of their adjusted gross income, which was $80,550,000.

4. Decatur

The Heart of the Valley is an even more fitting name, seeing how generous folks in this metropolitan area are. They gave 5.29% of their adjusted gross income, which equates to $89,805,000.

3. Tuscaloosa

Folks in the Tuscaloosa metropolitan area gave $144,264,000, which was a giving ratio of 5.29%.

2. Montgomery

Folks in the River Region reached deep in their pockets and gave $257,828,000, which was a giving ratio of 5.38%.

1. Anniston-Oxford

This metropolitan area gave an incredible 5.5% of its adjusted gross income, for a total of $57,759,000 in contributions. Congratulations on earning the number one spot!
