Wisconsin’s Magnificent Rock Garden And Grotto Is Truly A Work Of Art

Dickeyville Grotto in Wisconsin is a unique, handmade folk art site created by Father Matthias Wernerus, showcasing intricate details and materials from around the world.

Normally, "small town" and "world-class attraction" aren’t terms you’d put together. But there are exceptions to every rule, and in this case, that exception is the Dickeyville Grotto. The unique creation is crafted from a variety of materials from all around the world. An indescribable work of art, the Dickeyville Grotto is a must-see. Take a look:

As you probably guessed from the name, Dickeyville Grotto is located in Dickeyville, which is in Grant County.

Dubbed a "world-class folk art site," it's made up of a series of grottos and shrines.

The display surrounds Holy Ghost Parish, which makes sense when you learn that it was created by a former pastor of the church, Father Matthias Wernerus.

Father Wernerus spent five years, from 1925 -1930, working on the unique creation, a fact that's even more impressive when you consider the entire thing is handmade and was built without blueprints.

The priest’s handiwork is much more than a stunning site, though. There’s a reason (or two) behind it.

Dickeyville Grotto is a tribute to "two great American ideals" - religion and patriotism.

Nearly as unconventional as the site itself are the items used to make it. Colored glass, gems, and antique heirlooms are just a few of the materials used.

Natural aspects, like colorful flowers and greenery, only add to the site’s beauty.

With so many intricate details, you could easily spend hours at Dickeyville Grotto.

Or perhaps, you’ll want to visit more than once to take it all in. Luckily, there’s no admission, so multiple visits won’t break the bank.

The grounds even include a gift shop, so you can buy a few mementos to remember your visit.

Absolutely mesmerizing and incredibly unique, any visit to Dickeyville Grotto is sure to be a memorable one.
