When you arrive in this community, pop. 2,172, you might think you’ve arrived in Switzerland. New Glarus was founded in 1845 by Swiss immigrants and it has never forgotten how to have a good time, Swiss-style. Enjoy one of the town’s lively festivals, eat some authentic Swiss food, and savor one of the town’s famously refreshing beers.
Lake Geneva, WI 53147, USA
This town, pop. 8,100, has long been a summer escape. In the 1800s, wealthy Chicago residents built opulent summer homes along the lake’s shore. Many took refuge here after the Great Chicago Fire wiped out their urban residents in 1871. Several of the stately homes still stand and can be viewed via a lakefront footpath. Take in the architecture, then enjoy a boat tour, or head to the center of town for a little shopping or some cold ice cream. Take your time – Lake Geneva is a place you can enjoy at your own pace.
