Northern Wisconsin is a magical place – vast wild forests cover much of the landscape, offering visitors opportunities for adventure, tranquility, and an immersive experience in nature. A wild preserve offers visitors a chance to stay in a particularly pristine corner of the Northwoods. Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary has two historic cabins available to guests who are seeking a getaway they won’t soon forget. Here’s what you need to know about this special getaway spot in Wisconsin.
Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary isn’t located near close to any big city, which is part of its charm. It’s located in Washburn County and the closest community is Sarona, a tiny unincorporated place.
The property has a long history as an escape. In early 1900s, the property was purchased by Arthur Andrews, a grain merchant from Minneapolis – he used it as a family retreat. The property was named “Hunt Hill” after his wife’s family.
In 1954, the lone surviving heir to the property donated the land to the National Audubon Society so it could become a nature education center. Today it offers educational programming and events.
The expansive property covers nearly 600 acres and it’s wild and gorgeous. It has 13 miles of hiking trails, restored native prairie plants, two footbridges, and two historic cabins.
The preserve's two rustic rental cabins are on a hill overlooking a lake and the forest. One of the rentals is an authentic log cabin that was built in the 1930s. The second cabin was built back in 1917.
The cabins are timeless and beautiful and the perfect place to stay while you enjoy the property’s beautiful wild features. Steps from your door you’ll find a landscape that includes bogs, old growth forests, meadow, and four glacial lakes.
