Fish Creek is one of the prettiest villages you’ll find in Wisconsin. Located in the heart of Door County, this postcard-perfect town is filled with charming stores and restaurants that are strung along a small harbor studded with sailboats. On the weekends, Fish Creek’s small downtown can become packed with visitors from Illinois, and just above the fray, a historic inn treats guests to a healthy mix of luxury and tradition. The Thorp House Inn & Cottages offers a vacation experience you have to experience – here’s why you should make a reservation.
The Thorp House Inn was built for Freeman Thorp, nephew of Asa Thorp, Fish Creek’s founder. Unfortunately, he never was able to enjoy the home. On Oct. 3, 1903, the steamship Erie L. Hackley capsized near Marinette in a storm, taking the life of Freeman and 10 others.
Thorp’s widow needed income after the tragedy so she began renting rooms to early Door County tourists. The inn had several names over the years, including Cedar Ridge, Breezy Hill, and The Heritage. After closing for a time, it reopened to guests and today is called the Thorp House.
The stately inn is tucked along the side of the bluff that flanks Door County. The inn is steps from everything in Fish Creek and it has six rooms and six cottages available for guests.
The owners of the inn take great care of guests and the inn sees a lot of guests return year after year – some have been coming here for decades. It’s a treasure worth making your own!
The Thorp House Inn & Cottages serves a great breakfast that will keep you fueled for your Door County adventures and there are a lot of additional dining options nearby. It’s also near the southern entrance of Peninsula State Park. If you haven’t seen the new park tower yet, you should make the climb!
