Door County has some amazing beaches – Ephraim Beach, Sister Bay Beach, Nicolet Bay Beach, to name just a few. But if you want to get away from the crowds and enjoy an incredible sweep of sand on one of the best beaches in Wisconsin, head a little further north. In Newport State Park, a short sandy path leads to a bit of Lake Michigan paradise. Grab your beach blanket – here’s what’s waiting for you on Newport Beach.

To find Newport State park, drive North on Highway 42, through Ellison Bay, towards Gills Rock. Near the tip of the Door County peninsula, where you start running out of road, you’ll find a turnoff for the park.

The park covers more than 2,300 acres and it’s Wisconsin’s only wilderness-designated state park. It was created in 1964.

The park has miles of hiking trails and it’s also a popular place for camping. It’s not a place to go luxury glamping, though – many of the sites require a bit of a hike and while they are beautiful, they are rustic tent sites.

Many who come to the park are day trippers who visit the beach. It’s a short walk through the picnic area. When you pass some small dunes, you’ll be treated to an incredible view.

There was once a village here, and in the 1800s wooden sailing ships once pulled into this bay. The village is long gone, although there are a few ruins in the woods and you might encounter an old handmade nail while digging a moat for your sand castle on the beach.
