Door County has more than its share of natural beauty. It has lush cherry orchards, sweeping beaches, winding country roads, and towering bluffs that are all part of a geologic feature called the Niagara Escarpment. One of the most spectacular places in the county rewards adventurous paddlers with a wild view that’s like no other. Cave Point County Park is home to mysterious sea caves that kayakers can explore; it’s a gorgeous experience that’s worth a cold water kayak ride. Here’s what you need to know about this sea cave in Wisconsin:
Cave Point is located on the east shore of Door County, near Jacksonport and about 15 miles from Sturgeon Bay.
Lake Michigan can get very rough, and over the centuries the wind and the waves carved caves into the limestone. Today, outfitters lead tours to the caves.
Some believe the caves reach all across the peninsula but the theory has never been proven – in any case, you won’t be able to kayak that far.
The morning is a good time to explore the caves. The water is usually calmest early in the day and if you leave early enough you can even see the sun rise on the lake!
Due to the rocky nature of the shoreline, kayaks must be launched a short distance away from a nearby site. You’ll find it just north of Cave Point at Schauer Park.
You’ll want to use caution if you kayak at Cave Point. - weather conditions can change rapidly and the shoreline is rocky and rugged.
Door County Adventure Center offers regular kayak excursions to the caves. If you’re not a kayaker you can also explore Cave Point on foot – well-marked trails trace the shoreline. Interested in more amazing outdoor adventures? Here are some experiences to put on your list.
