A candy store isn’t the only place that’ll bring out the kid in you. A visit to Fennimore Doll and Toy Museum is also sure to do the trick. Just as the name implies, the museum is filled with dolls and toys. The impressive collection includes vintage toys as well as those from recent years, making it a great visit for kids and kids at heart. Take a look:
Some of the state’s best attractions are located in small towns – and that’s exactly the case with Fennimore Doll and Toy Museum, which is in Fennimore.
Opened in 1991, the museum showcases classic and collectible dolls and toys from around the world.
The collection includes heirlooms owned by the museum as well as those on loan, so new items are constantly coming and going, which means each visit is unique.
Throughout the museum, you’ll find a variety of exhibits, which feature dolls and toys from the 1800s through the 2000s.
Dolls - complete with period accessories - are a huge part of the collection. On display, you’ll find porcelain, china, paper maché, metal, composition, vinyl, and plastic dolls.
Among the impressive doll collection are more than 740 Barbies and accessories.
It’s not just dolls you’ll find at the museum, though. There are also a variety of toys.
Cast iron pieces, old farm machinery, tin toys, wooden toys, and classic Fisher Price toys are just a few items on display in the museum.
There are also lots of character pieces. Ninja Turtles, Star Wars, and Disney characters are a few of the familiar faces you’ll see at the museum.
Admission to the museum is just $3 for adults, $1.50 for kids 5 and up, and free for kids under 5.
After exploring Fennimore Doll and Toy Museum, consider paying a visit to Fennimore Railroad Historical Society Museum, which is just down the road.
A unique experience right from the start, the museum is housed in a building that’s been remodeled inside and out to resemble a turn-of-the-century depot.
But the building’s appearance isn’t the only cool thing about it. There’s also the impressive collection it houses, which includes train displays, antique farm tools, war memorabilia, and home appliances and tools from the 1900s.
The best thing about the museum, though, is the Wilkinson Collection, which includes an operational train that you can ride for just $1. Offering an authentic train experience, the track is surrounded by scale buildings.
Fennimore Doll and Toy Museum is open anytime by special appointment. It’s also open daily Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. September through October, it’s open Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. For more information, call (608) 822-4100.
