Brunet Island State Park is located in Chippewa County on the Chippewa River. It’s named after Jean Brunet, a prominent early settler who helped construct a dam and sawmill in the area and later ran a popular inn. The land became a park in 1936 when Northern States Power donated the land to the state.

Today the park is a little slice of paradise on the Chippewa River. It sprawls across more than 1,200 acres and includes a 169-acre island on the river.

The park has two campgrounds. The south campground has 24 sites, all with electrical hookups. The north campground has 45 rustic sites.

There’s a lot to do in the park. It’s an awesome spot for paddling. If you don’t have a canoe or kayak, you can rent one at the park office or at outfitters in nearby Cornell or Holcombe. There’s also a boat landing in the park that you can use if you bring your watercraft along.

If you enjoy hiking or bicycling, you’ll love this campground. There are eight miles of hiking trails and the park connects to to the Old Abe State Trail, where you ran ride or bike for miles, to Cornell or Chippewa Falls.

The park is pretty great for relaxing too -- it’s filled with shade trees and you’re never far from the Scenic Chippewa River. There’s even a 200-foot sand beach that’s the perfect spot for a warm summer day.

Brunet Island State Park’s south campground has a campsite accessible for people with disabilities and a shower building with flush toilets. To get really close to the water, choose the north campground; while there’s no electricity, many of the sites are right on the Chippewa River or its bays.
