For more than a century, the Green Bay waterfront has been the center of summer fun. Bay Beach Amusement Park is a city-owned attraction that's a must-visit in Green Bay. It has vintage roller coasters, classic treats, and a view of the bay that never gets old. Best of all: the park is very affordable so it won't break the bank.
Here's what you need to know about Bay Beach Amusement Park.
The park's origins can be traced to the 1890s when the location had a dance hall, a bar, and a bathhouse. It also had a popular swimming beach, and the first roller coaster was built in 1901.
In 1920, the property was donated to the city of Green Bay and it has since entertained scores of families along the lakeshore. The park is the 9th-oldest continuously operating amusement park in the United States and it's tied for 21st oldest in the world!
The park continues to evolve while retaining its classic charm. In 2010, it added a "new" roller coaster called the Zippin Pippin. The wooden roller coaster was nearly a century old but had been sitting unused in Memphis, Tennessee. It's having a great second life in Green Bay.
Fundraising is underway to restore the beach here to make it the swimmable oasis that it was in the 1930s. In the meantime, there's a lot to enjoy in this park, including 24 rides that accommodate thrill-seekers of all ages.
The lake offers a beautiful backdrop to the park and, depending on the wind direction, a refreshing lake breeze. The amusement park is within walking distance of Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary and lakeside hiking trails.
The park is very affordable, offering prices as classic as the rides. There's no admission to enter and ride tickets are just 25 cents each (most rides require one or two tickets per rider). There are concessions available on-site, including everything you need to enjoy a meal here.
Bay Beach Amusement Park is open May-September. Hours vary during the season - see the current hours here. Interested in more places for summer fun in Wisconsin? Check out these epic Wisconsin waterparks.
