Fall is a favorite season for many here in West Virginia, and for good reason. The mountains and valleys light up each autumn with brilliant flames of red, orange, and yellow. Thankfully, there are many ways for us to enjoy this spectacular show of color, from scenic drives to long hikes through deep forests to a relaxing ride on a scenic railroad.
The Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad runs along the South Branch of the Potomac River.
Beginning at Wappocomo Station in Romney, West Virginia, this rail ride takes you through historic farming country, past Eagle Rock, and into the stunning area known as "The Trough."
All throughout the ride, you can expect beautiful views of some of the prettiest country around. Trough Trips are available almost every day in October, with trips starting at 1:00 p.m. on weekdays and 10:00 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. on weekends.
In addition to beautiful fall colors, you'll also get a unique view of the Isaac Kuykendall house, built in 1789.
A prominent natural feature that you'll be able to see along the route as it winds along the river is Eagle Rock, and who knows...you may even see some of the birds for which the rock and the train are named.
Tickets for the Trough Trip start at $59 for adults, with cheaper fares for seniors and children. Specials and discounts are often available on the Potomac Eagle website or Facebook page, so make sure to check before booking!
